Check with N.A.I.A. at any time for further clarification. This isn't easy to understand and the insurance companies use different definitions and coverage forms so please review your policy personally with N.A.I.A.

How much liability coverage should I carry?
The answer to that question is : as much as possible. In this day and age with all the lawsuits that get filed days after an aircraft accident or incident and the extremely unreasonable jury awards the only answer to that question is to carry as much liability coverage as you can.

Are defense costs included within the liability limit?
Each insurance company has their own policy and their own wording as respects defense costs within the liability limit. We would have to examine your specific policy to determine this however on a general basis most companies do not limit defense costs within the liability limit. This is an extremely important value added feature that should be addressed at every renewal.
Some insurance companies will offer to lower their premium if you agree to let the defense costs be included within the limit of liability.

My pilot is very experienced in the aircraft my company owns. Do they still have to attend annual recurrent training?

There are certain circumstances where the insurance company may not require your named pilot to attend a full motion simulator recurrent training program but most will still want to see some type of recurrent training such as an Instrument Proficiency Check. Each exception to the annual recurrent training in a full motion simulator will have to be addressed with the underwriter. There are no broad guidelines that can be applied. One note of caution is the underwriter will want to investigate why the pilot or the company is unwilling to send the pilot for recurrent training.

We hire contract pilots to fly our aircraft. Does that affect our insurance coverage and rates?

The answer to that is yes. The insurance companies want to see a steady and capable crew for your aircraft. If you contract out with the local FBO for pilots and the pilots supplied are usually the same and remain current in the aircraft type then the insurance companies are not that concerned. That scenario is identical to having the pilots on your company payroll to fly the aircraft.
The other side of that scenario is when the flight crew is inconsistent and there is a lot of turn over at the FBO where the pilots are employed and subsequently always having different flight crews. This would certainly affect your insurability and premium.

What liability limits are available?

For industrial aid use aircraft the limit of liability can be anywhere from 1 million dollars to 500 million dollars. These limits can also be subject to a per passenger sub limit.

What is War and TRIA coverage?

Each insurance company decides on their own definition of war coverage but in general it is a an endorsement or another policy all together that would provide coverage if your aircraft was involved in something like civil unrest, or a foreign government seizes your aircraft or any number of excluded causes of loss under the standard policy form. That is just a general description and in no way defines any companies specific war coverage. Contact N.A.I.A. with your policy and further discussion.

TRIA coverage is the "Terrorism Risk and Insurance Act" that congress passed after 9/11. This endorsement or policy would provide specific coverage for cause of loss defined as a Terrorist action. It is required to be offered to all commercial operators and some companies offer the coverage to corporations and individuals if they choose to purchase.

I am the CEO/ President of the company and want to fly the corporate aircraft myself. Can I get insurance?
Most insurance companies are not interested in owner flown turbine type aircraft. They prefer companies that hire professional pilots who are hired for the sole purpose of flying the aircraft. Professional flight crews have been shown to be a better risk than owner flown aircraft. If the ceo/president of the company wants to fly the aircraft liability limits will be reduced and the number of insurance companies offering coverage will be reduced substantially as well as an increase in premium to cover the additional exposure of a non-professional pilot flying the aircraft.
